Not to me. Several years ago while coaching a Little League All-Star game, one of our assistant coaches was hit in the thigh by a stray bullet that whizzed over the field of play and struck him while he was standing directly in front of me at the entrance of the dugout. It was later determined that the bullet was fired from about a mile away by two guys target shooting in the woods.

You mean it sounds like the article is a lie? I mean, there's no way anyone could make this shot intentionally once, much less twice.

What are the odds? Moving car, moving bullet.

If she had washed one more dish, left her aunt’s house a second earlier — or later — or if she had been driving a mile an hour slower — or faster — that bullet would have landed harmlessly in a field to perhaps be found by an archaeologist 1,000 years from now.

If she had wiped her ass one more time that morning after taking her morning dump.
Or if she had decided to spit and not swallow, the night before. It simply endless.

this piece of journalism made me stop reading the article.

But I'm glad she swallowed.

Agreed. I think considering how much she has on her plate, she was remarkably cool about it. 2 autistic kids (one with CP) and she shrugs this off? Good for her. Most people, sadly, would be trying to cash in somehow. I give this woman a lot of credit.

Just saw this in the article...

Long had driven Tuesday to check on an aunt who recently had suffered a stroke. She did some cleaning, and after the two ate lunch, she washed the dishes before heading home about 12:45 p.m. She drove westbound on 307th Street toward U.S. 71.

“I was listening to NPR and thinking what a beautiful day it was,” Long said.

This woman is a saint. She even washed the dishes.

Just ban rifles or at least the firing of them at no target, I don't care if buckshot gets in the meat at least we don't have to be worried about stray fire.
And on another note, she toured with an orchestra but was kept out of the army due to hearing problems?

maybe a mile or more away — pulled the trigger on a high-powered rifle.

I want to know what kind of rifle it was. Unless the fucking thing was sighted for over a mile, it could have never traveled that far. Given the fact that they stated the slug was approx. the size of a thimble, it wasn't that big, and a 7MM Rem Mag has about 30 foot of drop at 1000 yards, which is way short of a mile. I'm thinking it was fired from way closer than that and had richocheted before hitting her.

Bullets could absolutely travel a mile and still have a lethal amount of energy. Whoever fired it most likely fired it at a fairly high angle, not straight on at a target. In cases like this it's not an accident, it's negligence and stupidity. People shoot into the air all the time, and now and then someone is "lucky" enough to catch it on the way down.

Just ban rifles or at least the firing of them at no target,

Fuck banning rifles, but I'm pretty sure there are already laws against using a firearm in a negligent manner, such as what the shooter must have done.

Could have fired at high elevation as an accidental discharge, or were just firing into the air because they're really stupid. All firearms have a wide less-than-lethal range which the slug will still reach, just not with enough energy left to kill very often, and the elevation it's fired at has to be abnormal.

Ricochet is plausible too, of course.

Reminds me of two episodes I saw some time ago of some type of FBI show where they take closed cases and go into details.

The first was two guys in a boat out on Lake Michigan (think it was Milwaukee) firing a rifle at cans floating in the water. Even though they were some distance out, they still thought it safe to be firing towards land. Anyway, one of the bullets bounced off of the water and headed for land. A young woman driving her car with the rear passenger window open was killed by it. The bullet passed through the open window and struck her in the back of the head. They said if the window was closed it would have been enough to stop the bullet.

The second I think was on the 4th of July. A lot of people were in a field, an old man was sitting in a chair when a bullet hit him of the left side of his chest and killed him. Because he was sitting, they more or less draw a straight line and came across a house a little over a mile away. Yes the owner had been outside that day firing his hand gun at an empty oil barrel when asked, but all his shots were accounted for, except for the one that was fired by a female friend who had never fired a gun before, she missed completely.

Lots of fishy stuff going on here indeed. Sounds like we have a JFK situation for starters and then there is the Lisa Long and "husband" Bryan VEST. Much fish to be served indeed.

But yeah, definitely mad props on being a good sport about everything. I bet the hole has powers.

I like how she considers herself lucky that the bullet didn't kill her while she has all those problems and got struck by the bullet in the first place. She is *clearly* unlucky, if anything.

Indeed, it is referred to as "reckless discharge", "unlawful discharge", "negligent discharge" and various other terms depending on your state.

This crap happens every year in Miami around New Year's Eve. Idiots shoot their guns into the air and the bullets strike innocent folks. A couple of years ago a man was in his back yard having a party and the bullet came straight down through his shoulder area and struck his aorta. His family thought he died of a heart attack until the coroner found the bullet. Every year the TV news people beg folks not to do this but they just don't listen.

I was unfortunate enough to witness a reckless discharge on Independence Day of 2007. A person at the party (the host) I was at took a 30-06 and fired it at a very high arc in their back yard (~75 degrees from horizon). This was in a fairly densely populated residential area.

I kept my eye on the news and paper to see if there were any reports of someone being hit by a stray bullet but didn't see any; hope I didn't miss it as I'd have turned the jackass in instantly. My (now wife) and I left that party about 12 seconds after he fired.

I can't imagine how fucking stupid that person was to do that. Boggles my mind. Something unintentional - missing your target or similar - pales in comparison to the absolute fucktardery I witnessed that night.
